About Us

Te Puru is a co-educational full primary school (U4), decile 6, with approximately 160 students. Te Puru School is nestled between hills and sea, enjoying a unique location on the Coromandel Peninsula. The school is situated 12 km north of the township of Thames and is approximately 1.5 hours from the major cities of Auckland, Hamilton and Tauranga.

Environment

The school grounds, of 1.6 hectares, have a beach frontage of 200 metres and riparian rights enable us to take full advantage of the coastal environment. We have a swimming pool and also make use of the sea for water-based activities. There is a range of outside spaces. As well as the beach we have an asphalt court area, grassed areas, an adventure pirate ship playground, a cobblestone shaded assembly area and extensive decking off all classrooms and a recently built activity centre.

Buildings

The school has grown considerably over the years from a two classroom school to its current status of 7 classrooms, a library, staffroom, various storage facilities, an administration area and our new Hall. In 1996 the Community also constructed a Marine Education Centre in order to promote the study of the unique environment in which the school is situated and to encourage the safe use of the marine environment
The Board operates successful minor and major maintenance programmes to ensure these facilities are maintained for the current and future generations.
