BOT Meeting 22 JuneKia ora.
The BOT is pleased to make the Expected Timeline for our new Principal appointment process available in the newsletter today. We trust that this will help to keep you informed as to the huge amount of work going on behind the scenes to ensure we employ the best person as the future leader for our amazing school.
Pete discussed the Teams continuing journey with writing moderation in his Principals report. The Team is undergoing a thorough review to ensure that the information you receive about your Child’s writing is accurate and consistent school wide. Phil’ reported on the workshops he has attended where other school’s shared their writing moderation. Phil discussed how this information is being dissected and reviewed to assist our Team and Children. This writing moderation journey links in with our School Development Goal to “develop and modify our reporting”.
The BOT would like to thank all the people who took the time to complete the Community survey last month. It was fantastic to receive feedback and be able to obtain a feel from the majority of the community.
97% of those who filled out the survey thought our snap shot books gave you a clear understanding of your child’s learning/abilities.
100% of responses rated our schools performance against our 2011 School Development Goal as average – excellent. No one marked this critical dimension of our school in the poor or below average band!
It is fantastic to get your feedback and reassurance that you feel your children are supported, challenged and safe at Te Puru School. A huge thank you to our awesome and dedicated Team.
This was fantastic feedback for the BOT and the Teaching Team and the results will be used to assist with planning future PD and where we may need to place more of an emphasis. You may view the percentages scored for each question in the survey in the office.
Next meeting Wednesday 13th July 2010, 4pm.
Regards Te Puru School BOT.
2008 ERO report
Te Puru School is located in a coastal community north of Thames and sited beside a beach on the firth of Thames. The school has recently been repainted in vibrant colours. A large hall and relocated information station, with library books and computers, have recently been added to school facilities. The principal provides clear direction and guidance for teachers in their practice. He is well supported by senior managers and staff, and together they work collegially to plan sound learning programmes.
Students are working well in classrooms and enjoy a wide variety of educational opportunities. Teachers use meaningful contexts for education and students are developing confidence in using skills for inquiry learning. Writing and literacy learning opportunities are integrated into other curriculum areas and activities in and out of the classroom. The next step is for the school’s philosophy to be further developed to empower students to have ownership of their learning. Teachers need to embed approaches to developing this philosophy in their practice.
School data collated from standardised tests showed that a significant majority of students are reading at or above their chronological age. The achievement levels of boys, girls and Maori are comparable. In mathematics, a significant majority of students are achieving at the expected levels within national numeracy comparisons.
The school has identified writing as a teaching focus to lift students’ levels of achievement. Teachers are undertaking an effective professional development programme in writing. Relevant specific student achievement targets in 2008 have been set for writing, finding information, and for those students identified as needing additional support.
Positive and respectful interactions between students and teachers are evident. Teachers work enthusiastically together to plan relevant programmes for students. Parents are encouraged to support their children’s learning in and out of the classroom.
Sound review systems and practices are used to survey and receive feedback from staff, parents and students. The school’s approaches to self review are providing evidence to make resourcing decisions and improve teaching practice. Communication practices need to be further improved by clarifying community and school shared expectations for learning and achievement.
Knowledgeable and well-informed trustees are committed to providing the best resources and learning opportunities for students. They work actively with parents and community to support the school’s operations and programmes.
